Our Method
The Montessori Method
The Montessori philosophy is a time-honored approach to early childhood education and beyond in countries around the world. It all began with the pedagogical teachings of Dr. Maria Montessori, who opened her first experimental classroom in Rome, Italy in 1907. Based on her research as a institutional medical practitioner with cognitively-impaired children, she developed a prepared classroom environment with an extensive “hands-on” academic curriculum. Within this setting, children moved freely (with guided discipline) and selected numerous activities that developed their curiosity to learn about the world around them.
“Children are human beings to whom respect is due, superior to us by reason of their innocence and of the greater possibilities of their future.”
— Maria Montessori
The keys to success in a Montessori environment are
uninterrupted time to explore new interests and concepts
development of self motivation and self discipline
well-trained teachers to foster children’s development
children understanding that they are part of a community of learners who support one another emotionally, socially, physically, and cognitively
Montessori education is a secular approach that respects all children and their families without regard to race, ethnic origin, nationality, religion, gender, or socio-economic standing. Maria Montessori believed that all children have the right to a quality education. She believed that her approach would help guide children to create a better world, one where understanding and peace would always prevail.
At Seaton Children’s House, we believe that all children should have the freedom and support to follow their intrinsic nature, to develop their multiple intelligences, and to share their innate gifts and talents with the world. Through the teaching and mentoring process, we hope to successfully construct a home within the heart and mind of every child where they can always find peace and rest. We consider it a privilege to continue the work of Dr. Maria Montessori in our community.
